What is the status of "ordination" in the halakhah? In a world where you can download a s'mikhah certificate from the Web, how can you tell the real rabbis and cantors from the phony ones? Are the words "real" and "phony" even appropriate here? Must one graduate from a recognized seminary or yeshivah before earning the title "rabbi" or "cantor"? Or may anyone simply adopt those titles for themselves?
